Ready Workforce Institute: A New Work-Based Learning Model

For Viking Academy Students

Goals:

  • Help students develop soft skills

  • Strengthen Bristol’s workforce pool

  • Broaden awareness of local industry

  • Connect students with post-high school employment opportunities

Structure:

  • Students are placed in a job for four Fridays working in low-skill, entry level positions.

Employers Provide:

  • Clear expectations

  • Supervision and support

  • Any necessary safety training

  • Feedback on student workers

Viking Academy Provides:

  • 1-2 student workers

  • Transportation

  • Bagged lunch

  • Insurance


Students then move to another job placement for the next four Fridays, with the opportunity for eight job placements per school year. Viking Academy is partnering with non-profit Advance Bristol to provide compensation to students for their work.  They are paid $50 per day.
