Freshman Orientation Day on July 24

Freshman Orientation Day on July 24

Dear Class of 2023 Student and Parent(s)/Guardian(s):

The Tennessee High School Freshman Leadership Team would like to invite members of the class of 2023 to Freshman Orientation Day. The first year of high school is widely believed to be a pivotal moment for all students, and our goal is to provide incoming Vikings opportunities to achieve lasting success at Tennessee High.

Students attending the half-day session will tour the school, locate their classrooms, and compete in Castle Games. There will be games and activities of all types, so students should dress appropriately. Attending the orientation rally will ease the transition from middle school to high school as well as lessen the anxieties students may experience.  Welcome to our Viking Family, Class of 2023!

Though lunch will not be served, we have arranged for Kona Ice to be on campus for students who would like to enjoy a cool snack in between activities. If your child would like to purchase Kona Ice, please send a small amount of cash along with him or her. Transportation will not be provided, so please make arrangements for your child.

Mark your calendars for July 24th from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM!  Any changes in schedule will be posted on the THS website. Our Welcome Presentation will begin promptly at 9:00 am. Please drop students off at the entrance to the auditorium prior to the start time. The auditorium doors will open at 8:45 am.

We look forward to seeing you in July!

Thank you,

Tennessee High School Freshman Leadership Team

Summer Reading Requirements

All students enrolled in an English course, with the exception of dual-enrollment students, are required to complete summer reading. For the 2019-2020 school year, each grade level has assigned at least one text to all students. Students enrolled in English II Honors, English III Honors, A.P. Language, and A.P. Literature are required to read two texts over the summer.

THS is throwing a Summer Reading Celebration to reward students who complete the reading over the summer. An assessment will be given to all students, those scheduled for English in the fall and spring semester, at the start of school in August to determine attendance eligibility. The texts will also be used in class instruction.

Five People You Meet in Heaven-Mitch Albom

Eddie is a grizzled war veteran who feels trapped in a meaningless life of fixing rides at a seaside amusement park. His days are a dull routine of work, loneliness, and regret. Then, on his 83rd birthday, Eddie dies in a tragic accident, trying to save a little girl from a falling cart. He awakens in the afterlife, where he learns that heaven is not a lush Garden of Eden, but a place where your earthly life is explained to you by five people. These people may have been loved ones or distant strangers. Yet each of them changed your path forever.

The Glass Castle -Jeannette Walls

Jeannette Walls grew up with parents whose ideals and stubborn nonconformity were both their curse and their salvation. Rex and Rose Mary Walls had four children. Rex was a charismatic, brilliant man who, when sober, captured his children's imagination, teaching them physics, geology, and above all, how to embrace life fearlessly. Rose Mary, who painted and wrote and couldn't stand the responsibility of providing for her family, called herself an "excitement addict." Later, when the money ran out, or the romance of the wandering life faded, the Walls retreated to the dismal West Virginia mining town -- and the family -- Rex Walls had done everything he could to escape. He drank. He stole the grocery money and disappeared for days. As the dysfunction of the family escalated, Jeannette and her brother and sisters had to fend for themselves, supporting one another as they weathered their parents' betrayals and, finally, found the resources and will to leave home.
